About Umbria
Umbria is an untouched, verdant paradise that is referred to as the green heart of Italy. It is idyllic in setting, with endless countryside. It is viewed as a tranquil version of the beautiful and charming region of Tuscany and has become the chosen destination for those seeking something unique and authentic.
The stunning Italian town of Orvieto is situated on a beautiful hilltop overlooking the mountainous scenery that Umbria is famous for . it is home to a network of underground tunnels.
Close to Terni is Marmore waterfall is an impressive, artificial waterfall that was created by the Romans, to drain water from the river Velino. It stands at 165 metres tall and is in a stunning location.
Italy’s fourth largest lake is nearby – Lake Trasimeno, surrounded by atmospheric castles and charming medieval towns including Passignano and Castiglione del Lago. Small and unique vineyards line the lake and are a great find for some special wines that can only be produced in the microclimate of the lake.
Umbria is also known as the ‘Wine Region’ of Italy. Famously there is the Lungarotti Winery that sits near the border of Tuscany, this also has a wine and olive oil museum on site.
Perugia – the capital of Umbria only became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1860, but has a rich history hat stretches back thousands of years before.
Perugia has become famous for chocolate, mostly because of a single firm, Perugina, whose Baci (‘Kisses’ in English) are widely exported.
Assisi is the birthplace of Saint Francis who is believed to be the saint of animals, and the city is referred to as the city of peace. If you are visiting Assisi it is hard to miss St Francis’ Basilica.
